Turned Walnut Bowl
This walnut turned bowl is made from black walnut, grown in the Upper Moutere region. It was a scrap that was given to me, and sat in the workshop waiting to reveal its innner beauty. It has silky smooth surface, and has a nice sheen.
The bowl is 200mm in diameter, and 90mm high. Its inside shape is a deep dish, with a small undercut rim. On the outside it has a small depression near the top, with a three line decoration.
Black walnut is a sort after timber that is used in high end furniture. It has a wide colour range, from light brown, to deep blacks. It is known as a hardwood, and works well with hand tools, machines and also if air dried steam bends into curves well. David Haig Furniture maker uses it in his Monogram rocking chairs.
The bowl is designed to be a display piece, not for use in as food bowl. It is finished in Liberon Finihsing Oil and wax.
Caring for your Bowl
To look after your walnut bowl, you should dust regularly. Every 6 months or so, use a good quality furniture wax. These usually contain beeswax and canuba wax.
